Preschoolers can learn basic emergency steps through calm, simple language and practice, without ever feeling frightened by the topic. The key is treating it like any other routine, not a scary exception. September is National Preparedness Month, so it’s a good time to talk through how this actually works.
Preschoolers respond better to simple instructions like “go to Mom” or “stand by the door” than abstract explanations of why something is happening. Save the bigger explanations for when they’re older, and let your tone do a lot of the work. Kids take emotional cues from the adults around them, so a calm, matter-of-fact voice teaches a child that this is a normal thing to practice, not something to fear.
Repetition is what turns an emergency plan into a habit instead of a scary unknown.
Practicing a fire drill or a “meet at this spot” plan a few times, calmly and without drama, helps a child know exactly what to do without needing to feel afraid. This is part of what helps keep your child safe, at school and at home alike.
Acting out a simple drill with stuffed animals or during pretend play helps preschoolers absorb the steps without it feeling like a lecture.
A two or three-minute practice session is plenty. Longer sessions tend to lose a preschooler’s attention and can turn a helpful habit into a chore.

Most preschoolers can start learning simple steps, like where to go or who to find, starting around age 3 or 4.
Keep sessions short and calm, and revisit the topic another day rather than pushing through in one sitting. Repetition over time works better than one long conversation.
For preschoolers, focus on the action steps rather than the reasoning. Save the deeper explanations for when they’re a bit older.
Safety and calm routines go hand in hand in our classrooms. If you’d like to see how we approach this at The Learning Factory Academy, schedule a tour or explore our programs.
