Watching a plant grow from seed to sprout teaches preschoolers patience, responsibility, and early science thinking, all through something as simple as checking on a garden bed each day. It’s one of the clearest examples of hands-on learning there is. That’s part of why gardening is built into our STEM & Garden Program.

A garden doesn’t reward instant results, and that’s exactly what makes it valuable.
Gardening builds scientific thinking simply through observation and cause and effect.
Asking a child what they think will happen if a plant doesn’t get water, then letting them observe the outcome, builds real scientific reasoning. That’s the same kind of thinking behind the benefits of STEM education we build on in other parts of the classroom.
Counting leaves, measuring how tall a plant has grown, or sorting seeds by size all sneak basic math into an activity that doesn’t feel like math at all.
A garden gives kids a reason to show up consistently, which is a harder skill to teach than it sounds.
Watering a plant regularly, even when it’s not particularly exciting that day, teaches a kind of follow-through that few other preschool activities require. It also gives kids a low-stakes way to practice problem- solving when something doesn’t go as planned, like a plant that wilts despite their best efforts.

No. A single pot on a windowsill works just as well as a garden bed for teaching these same lessons.
Fast-growing options like beans, sunflowers, or herbs like basil tend to hold a preschooler’s attention better than slower-growing plants.
That’s a valuable lesson too. Talking through what might have gone wrong teaches resilience and scientific thinking just as much as a successful harvest would.
Our STEM & Garden Program gives children hands-on experience with growing, measuring, and observing all year round. If you’d like to see it in action, schedule a tour or explore our programs.
